Families normally receive acceptance information within 3 weeks of SEP receiving a completed application (this includes receiving all supporting documentation if necessary). Acceptance is different from "application confirmation", which families should receive shortly after applying online. "Application confirmation" is simply an email verifying that your online application was received, not that placement into a class has occurred.

NEW THIS FALL!

ACCELERATED WEEKEND ACADEMY (AWE)

Saturday, November 1 and Sunday November 2

Northwestern University campus

Exploring Geometry Through The Geometer's Sketchpad

grades 6-7

Digital Logic and Hardware Programming

grades 8-9

Accelerated Weekend Experience (AWE) provides academically talented students in grades 6-9 an opportunity to explore an area of study in depth and with concentration over one weekend, with an expert in the field. Since older students often try to juggle many commitments, AWE affords them the chance to be inspired, invigorated and impassioned in a short timeframe. Participants explore and apply new technology with like-minded peers and vanguard instructors. Register online or with a Saturday Enrichment print application.

Exploring Geometry Through The Geometer’s Sketchpad

Students learn to use the dynamic geometry software, “The Geometer’s Sketchpad” to create and manipulate geometric constructions, thereby exploring various geometric relationships. A transformational approach is emphasized by using the power of the software. Students reflect, translate, rotate and dilate to investigate the properties of various geometric shapes, among other concepts and ideas. At the end of AWE students will be able to:

* Construct geometric figures based on definitions
* Apply geometric transformations
* Understand the relationships between Euclidean construction and proof
* Graph functions geometrically

Note: This class is not appropriate for students who are currently taking, or have already taken, a high school level Geometry course.

Subject Area: Math

Qualifying Score: Math

Digital Logic and Hardware Programming

Prerequisite: Students must have experience with basic algebra in order to take this course and provide evidence with a report card.

That mysterious black box you call a computer will finally be demystified! In this weekend course students are introduced to digital computer systems and information representation. They learn how a computer actually computes and manipulates binary data. The class covers very primitive gate-level design of digital systems. It is designed for students who are interested in computer science, electronics, logic, mathematics or engineering. Upon completion of this class, students have a general understanding of:

* Binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal number systems
* Use of binary and hexadecimal representation for numerics such as ASCII and BCD
* Boolean Algebra
* Software simulation tools for circuit design

Subject Area: Technology

Qualifying Score: Math
